
China’s aluminium production grew 1.5% year-on-year to 2.79 million tonnes in May, according to data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday June 14.

On a daily basis, China produced 90,000 tonnes of aluminium last month, from 92,300 tonnes in April, according to Reuters calculations based on the data.
The world’s biggest aluminium producer churned out 13.6 million tonnes of aluminium in the first five months of 2018, up 1.4 per cent from the same period last year, the data showed.
Production of 10 nonferrous metals- including copper, aluminium, lead, zinc and nickel registered 4.3 per cent growth in May, 2018. The total production stood at 4.55 million tonnes. During January- May, production of nonferrous metals came in at 22.2 million tonnes, an increase of 3.2 per cent.
In another update by Reuters, China announced plans to ban new aluminium production capacity in order to improve air quality. “In the coming three years, China will aim to make ‘obvious’ improvements on air quality and ‘sharply’ cut major air pollutants,” a state radio report said citing the state council.
