
Base metals fell across the board overnight with the rising of US dollar and LME aluminium closed lower at US$ 2278 per tonne from US$ 2309 per tonne. Shanghai Metals Market expects LME aluminium to edge up with a trading range at US$2,270-2,290 per tonne.

As on June 13, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stands at US$ 2277.50 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 2278 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 2275 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 2276 per tonne; Dec 19 bid price stands at US$ 2282 per tonne, and Dec 19 offer price stands at US$ 2287 per tonne.
The LME aluminium opening stock slightly dropped to 1153875 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 937150 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 216725 tonne.
LME aluminium 3-months ABR price is hovering at US$ 2283 per tonne.
SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange increased to US$ 2277 per tonne on June 14 from US$ 2268 per tonne on June 13.
With pressure from shorts, the SHFE 1808 contract dropped to a low of RMB 14,570 per tonne to test support at the 60-day moving average yesterday morning. It recovered some of its losses in the morning to close at RMB 14,670 per tonne. The contract remained rangebound within a narrow range overnight after it hit a high of RMB 14,750 per tonne, while its LME counterpart traded strongly. The SHFE 1808 contract is likely to trade at RMB 14,500-14,800 per tonne today. Spot prices are seen at a discount of RMB 20 per tonne to a premium of RMB 20 per tonne. The contract is expected to dip further in the short run on weak fundamentals and declining alumina prices.
The US dollar index hit a high of 94.05 overnight following the Federal Reserve Board’s decision to hike interest rate for the second time this year and indication that two more increases are likely in 2018. The index, however, lost some gains later. Key factors to watch today include China’s economic data in May, European Central Bank meeting, US import price index and retail sales growth in May, and US initial jobless claims over the week ended June 9.
