Century Aluminum Company announced the third-quarter results of 2021 ended September 30, reporting a 10 per cent rise in net sales quarter-on-quarter from $528 million to $582.4 million. Shipments grew 3 per cent from 190,894 tonnes in Q2 2021 to 196,095 tonnes in Q3 2021.

The company also reported a net loss of $52.4 million for the third quarter, which was $17.3 million lower than $35.1 million in the second quarter. The third-quarter results were negatively impacted by $46.7 million of net exceptional items, in particular $35.0 million of unrealized losses on derivative instruments, $7.7 million in legal settlements, and $4.0 million in share-based compensation costs. However, adjusted net loss improved sequentially by $22.1 million to $5.7 million in Q3.
Adjusted EBITDA increased quarter-on-quarter from $33.9 million in the June quarter to $70.3 million in the September quarter, primarily driven by higher prices of primary aluminum and increased regional premiums but partially offset by increased power prices.
“Industry conditions remained robust in the third quarter, with continued strong demand expansion in our markets in Europe and the United States,” commented President and Chief Executive Officer Jesse Gary. “At the same time, production cuts in China and Europe, driven by global energy shortages and Chinese decarbonization policies, have moved the global aluminum market into deficit, resulting in aluminum inventories falling to multi-year lows.
Mr Gary also mentioned of the commencement of a new low-carbon billet casthouse construction at Grundartangi, Iceland smelter. “Once the two-year project is complete, the new casthouse will enable Grundartangi to cast over 80% of its production as value-added products, further strengthening this world-class asset. In addition, the billets and other value-added products produced at Grundartangi will continue to be produced using 100% renewable energy, expanding our Natur-Al™ line of low-carbon products and offering low-carbon billets to the European marketplace,” he said.
