Australia's aluminium specialist, Capral Aluminium, has achieved yet another milestone in sustainable building with their Lower carbon aluminium product, LocAl®, named the Green Building Product category winner at the 2023 Architecture and Design Sustainability Awards. Capral's domestically extruded, lower-carbon aluminium stands out as evidence of the company's dedication to environmentally friendly business methods and aluminium conservation in this age of environmental sensitivity.
"We are incredibly grateful to be recognised by the expert judging panel, who are leaders in their respective fields - from universities, industry associations and architecture firms; they know what sustainable buildings look like and what it takes to achieve them - and they picked LocAl®," said Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager Kellie Moore.
The Sustainability Awards is Australia's oldest and most prestigious awards programme devoted to recognising and celebrating achievement in sustainable design and building. The programme will enter its 17th year in 2023, with winners revealed on November 9th at the annual gala event in Sydney. Capral was named the Green Building Product category winner for its market-leading Lower Carbon Aluminium product, LocAl®.
Capral's goal when introducing LocAl® in November 2022 was to make locally extruded, lower-carbon Aluminium accessible to Australian manufacturers, architects, and designers. LocAl® offers two lower carbon aluminium alternatives: LocAl® Green with carbon emissions of 8kg CO2e/kg Al* and LocAl® Super Green with carbon emissions of 4kg CO2e/kg Al* - both of which are among the lowest carbon aluminium options available internationally.
"For a very long time, window system designers have been talking about the thermal performance of window systems as the key to creating a sustainable building envelope - at Capral, what we recognise is that the time has come to go a step further, not only must the window systems we bring to market be high performance with excellent thermal credentials, but we must also prioritise the reduction of embodied carbon," added Kellie Moore.
The inclusion of LocAl® is a standard feature across all Capral patented window and door systems without any additional cost. When selecting from the Capral AGS™, Artisan™, Futureline™ Urban™, UrbanPlus™, or locally distributed Schüco® ranges, the principal Aluminium used in these systems will be labelled with the LocAl® Green badge, indicating a carbon intensity of 8kg CO2e/Kg Al*.
Capral, the largest extruder and distributor of aluminium products in Australia, has significantly expanded the scope of local Aluminium. Numerous pioneering Australian manufacturers have decided to transition to LocAl® aluminium for their extruded aluminium supply, with a proactive emphasis on minimising the embodied carbon in their aluminium products.
Capral is the only aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certified extruder in Australia, and they also have the award-winning LocAl® Lower Carbon aluminium product. Capral Aluminium is accredited to extrude, store, and distribute aluminium goods and services by the ASI Performance Standard V3 and the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) V2. All 26 of Capral's Australian mills, distribution hubs, and trade centres are included in the certificates, as are all of Australia's states and territories.
Capral's achievement at the Sustainability Awards comes on the same day the company extended its LocAl® offering into rolled goods, with Capral now offering the option to deliver LocAl® aluminium plate. The need for sustainable construction materials has evolved from a fad to an essential requirement, prompting firms like Capral to lead the charge in offering solutions that fulfil demanding sustainability standards while providing excellent performance and functionality. Capral's dedication to sustainability is evident in its comprehensive approach to product development, production processes, and corporate social responsibility, establishing the firm as a torchbearer of responsible and ethical aluminium supply in the Australian market.
