Canvus' recycling saga: Turning turbine blades into minimalistic public furniture

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Canvus, a pioneering start-up based in Avon, Ohio, has taken a sustainable approach by repurposing blades from decommissioned wind turbines to craft unique furniture pieces. The company's commitment to sustainability travels far beyond the wind turbine blades. Canvus incorporates recycled aluminium for bases and frames, further contributing to a circular economy.

Canvus' recycling saga: Turning turbine blades into minimalistic public furniture

To address the environmental impact of wind turbine disposal, Canvus transforms these blades, which are typically challenging to recycle due to their fibreglass composition, into what they aptly term "functional art" for public spaces. The utilisation of reclaimed materials extends to rubber seating made from recycled tires and shoes, as well as post-consumer carpeting and rice hulls. This multifaceted approach not only repurposes materials but also minimises landfill contributions.

Canvus offers a comprehensive service, cutting the turbine blades on-site for efficient processing. The company manages the logistics seamlessly, coordinating transportation from wind farms to its manufacturing facilities across the United States. This eco-conscious process ensures safe transport and repurposing of the blades into public furniture pieces.

The company's products, range and availability

The company's creations, ranging from benches to picnic table sets, showcase a commitment to aesthetics and functionality. The products are available in three neutral colours or can be uniquely hand-painted by artists using the company's Primed And Ready (PAR) finishes.

Cities like North Chicago, Illinois; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Tehachapi, California; and Avon, Ohio, have embraced Canvus' sustainable furnishings in their public spaces, highlighting the growing adoption of eco-friendly practices in urban development.

In the broader context of wind turbine waste reduction, Canvus stands alongside other innovators. Stora Enso and Voodin Blade Technology GmbH explore the feasibility of wooden blades for enhanced recyclability. Meanwhile, researchers at Michigan State University are developing a composite resin for blades that not only withstands adverse weather conditions but can also be recycled into various products, demonstrating the evolving landscape of sustainable solutions in the renewable energy sector.

The company's moto in a nutshell

In the realm of aluminium, Canvus' approach aligns with the principles of circular economy, repurposing materials to create functional and aesthetically pleasing products. The incorporation of recycled aluminium in the bases and frames reflects a conscious effort to minimise the environmental footprint. This innovative use of materials in the wind energy sector not only addresses disposal challenges but also sets a commendable standard for sustainable practices.
