UPM Speciality Papers has joined hands with machinery expert Bobst and coatings brand Michelman to unveil a sustainable alternative to the conventional multi-laminated plastic solutions called the oneBarrier FibreCycle packaging system.
UPM Speciality Papers claims to have incorporated its patented Solide Lucent variation of paper, which has a robust yet smooth surface for lightweight, specialised coatings. On the other hand, the aluminium lamination technology was a gift from Bobst, who, with its ALuBond coating, can provide a thickness lesser than the density of human hair. Michelman took the responsibility of internally coating the packaging solution for enhanced barrier properties, heat sealing and priming.
UPM plans to showcase this latest innovation at the Interpack Exhibition from 4 to 10 May 2023 in Dusseldorf. The unique feature of oneBarrier FibreCycle is that it can be recycled without pre-sorting the packaging material, which gives the food or beverage brand owners an open hand to use their prevailing recycling lines.
UPM Speciality Papers’ oneBarrier FibreCycle packaging is a paper-based, sustainable and recyclable alternative to non-decomposable plastic solutions. The aluminium barrier inside the packaging solution keeps the aroma and quality of the product intact, may it be food or beverages.
The director of products & technology at UPM Specialty Papers, Janne Varvemaa, commented: “This is a truly ground-breaking solution for foods with a long shelf-life. These products are usually packaged in a variety of plastic laminates or plastic structures that are not recyclable. Our aim was to produce a recyclable, paper-based packaging solution – and we can say ‘mission accomplished’. Now we’re delighted to offer Interpack visitors a closer look.”
Bobst marketing and communications manager Sara Alexander points out: “Recycling is a must for any new packaging solution coming to the market. We can be proud of having accomplished that with an elegant, lightweight solution that is ready for commercial use.”
UPM Speciality’s oneBarrier FibreCycle packaging can be considered to be a profound, sustainable option for protecting food and other preserved products for a longer duration. This packaging solution will positively impact the food and beverages industry since there is a constant demand for sustainability in those areas.
Sales director of EMEA at Michelman, Thierry Van Migem, exemplified: “It is especially important to stay agile in the face of continually evolving legislation. By incorporating the highly versatile barrier properties provided by advanced coating technologies, we have been able to meet the performance needs and sustainability goals that are prevalent in the market.”
