International Responsible Business Conduct (IRBC) has completed a project examining aluminium and bauxite supply chains to improve transparency and traceability in materials supporting the renewable energy transition. Mount Ridley Mines has reported 94.9 per cent gallium recovery from a third-party bauxite sample using its patent-pending Selectro process, alongside recoveries of 92 per cent aluminium and 97 per cent iron in a single low-temperature leach. The test also produced a silica-rich residue instead of conventional red mud, highlighting the technology’s potential to recover multiple metals from bauxite through one processing route. The sample was provided by Australian Silica Quartz Group from its Darling Range bauxite project in Western Australia. China’s Rizhao Port Group is reportedly chosen by Aluminium Corporation of China (Chalco) as the operator of the Boffa Port project in Guinea. The Boffa Port, part of the Boffa bauxite project, has a capacity of handling 12 million tonnes of bauxite per year. The port is expected to commence its operations in December this year. After recording a month-on-month rise in April 2019, China’s bauxite import in May declined 4.59 per cent from April to come in at 9.71 million tonnes, according to China Customs data. In April 2019, China’s bauxite import was at 9.77 million tonnes after rising 24.5 per cent from a month ago. On a yearly basis, the bauxite import by China in the month of May stood up by 33.18 per cent, while in April the import volume was up 68.2 per cent from the same period last year. Aluminium Stewardship Initiative announced that it issued certification to Hydro’s Paragominas bauxite mine and Alunorte alumina refinery against the Performance Standards and the Chain of Custody Standard. The certification covers both the production sites and the alumina from Alunorte originating from Paragominas (or other ASI certified plants). According to the global export-import data, bauxite import by Romania is likely to drop 6 per cent year on year in 2019 to stand at 1.7 million tonnes. Until last year, the country’s bauxite import continued rising since 2016. From 986,348 tonnes in 2016, Romania’s bauxite import in 2017 rose to 1.3 million tonnes.
