Queensland Mines Minister Andrew Cripps has refused to rule out mining in the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on Cape York in the state's far north. More than 600 people, led by Terri Irwin, had signed a petition calling on the Government to ensure no mining applications would be approved in the area. Cape Alumina is conducting environmental assessments for a proposed bauxite project on part of the reserve. It has been declared a "significant project" by the Queensland coordinator-general. The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries has submitted a petition to the minister of Mines, Dinsha Patel, requesting him to withdraw and revise the export duty on bauxite. According to the petition, as a result of the export duty on bauxite, India has seen a 11% decline in exports. "The proposed levy will also force mine closures in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra and jeopardize the direct and indirect employment of people," the letter said.
