The "Play Clean" recycling programme at Ball Arena has been running for 15 years, and this year marks the third year of collaboration between Ball Corporation and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE). Together, they have made the venue's beverage packaging infinitely recyclable, increased on-site aluminium recycling, and used in-venue messaging and other marketing tools to educate fans and the Denver community about the importance of their packaging choices and aluminium recycling.
The partnership aims to produce 100 per cent aluminium packaging for all fan-facing beverage containers and ample on-site aluminium recycling, including placing more than 240 recycling bins around the arena and mobile recycling backpacks carried on the backs of on-site ambassadors to bring recycling directly to the fans.
An incentive programme has also been implemented, with aluminium recycling machines strategically placed around the venue to encourage fans to recycle aluminium cans, bottles, and cups to win a gift card. Along with scoreboard advertising encouraging fans to recycle and assist Ball Arena in achieving one million pounds of recycled aluminium to win unique prizes.
The partnership's history has proved to be fruitful. Ball Arena recycled 183,000 pounds of aluminium and removed 1.1 million plastic cups and bottles in 2022. The CANteen and The Point are new this year. Both areas provide new concession stands for fans and additional areas within the venue to showcase and interact with the aluminium packaging.
