Sustainability has become a top priority for the aluminium industry. From small to large scale, many companies are doing their bit to move towards a greener and cleaner environment. Anderson Valley Brewing Company (AVBC), a California-based brewery, announced they are shifting from glass bottles to aluminium cans, making the switch to the most environmentally friendly beer packaging conceivable.

Recycling a can requires 90 per cent less energy than recycling glass bottles since aluminium is constantly recyclable. AVBC stated they would use aluminium cans with cardboard covers to pack the beer bottles.
Additionally, by transitioning from glass to cans, AVBC lowered their trucking by approximately 60 per cent. This is because cans are lighter and transport more effectively. By enabling a more airtight seal and eliminating all UV rays, aluminium cans help keep beer fresher for longer.
“Our last run of Boont Amber in glass bottles was a bit bittersweet because of how historic that beer is, but we have now officially transitioned entirely to aluminum cans with cardboard wrap packaging. We also found that with our new cardboard wraps we use 52% less total cardboard than our old glass package format and we can reduce our overall material costs by up to 30% while doing better for the planet. This is the most environmentally responsible beer package available – a milestone that has allowed us to dramatically reduce both supply chain and packaging costs all while dramatically reducing our carbon footprint,” said President and CEO Kevin McGee.
