Yamaha begins using recycled aluminium for its motorcycle parts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050
Yamaha Motor Company, a Japanese multinational manufacturer of motorcycles, has started using green aluminium for manufacturing vehicle parts, with effect from February 2023. Yamaha is the first Japanese motorcycle company using aluminium. It has reportedly entered into a new agreement with an aluminium ingot supplier to source the metal. Green aluminium is aluminium produced using renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions in its manufacture. Aluminium parts account for 12 to 31 per cent of the total weight of a motorcycle. According to the US Geological Survey, India imported 102,900 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the United States during the fourth quarter of 2022, which reflected a sequential downfall of 20.11 per cent from 128,800 million tonnes in Q3 2022. In total, India imported 231,700 million tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US during the second half of 2022, up by 2.07 per cent from 227,000 million tonnes in H1 2022. In December 2022, India sourced 33,300 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the United States, compared to 28,800 tonnes in November. That represented a month-on-month growth of 15.63 per cent, found USGS. According to the Shanghai Metals Market survey, China’s social inventories of primary aluminium across eight major consumption areas, including SHFE warrants, totalled 1.268 million tonnes on Monday, February 27. Over the weekend, the inventories increased by 20,000 tonnes from 1.248 million tonnes, and over a week rose by 35,000 tonnes from 1.233 million tonnes. Since January 19, before the Chinese New Year Holiday, the country’s aluminium ingot inventories have accumulated 524,000 tonnes. The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), in its first major recycling campaign for 2023, collected 7,357 kg of aluminium cans.
