The LME aluminium benchmark price closed the week on Friday, September 29, with a leap of US$75.50 per tonne or 3.4 per cent. Indian aluminium players have increased their aluminium selling price this week in tandem with the LME aluminium growth trend. Vedanta has increased its aluminium ingot and aluminium products prices twice this week, while Hindalco once so far. Aluminium ingot production in Iran during March 21-August 22 records a drop of 1.2% Y-o-Y
According to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organisation (IMIDRO), aluminium ingot production in Iran during the first five months of the Iranian calendar year (March 21-August 22) amounted to 267,983 tonnes, reflecting a drop of 3,243 tonnes or 1.20 per cent from 271,226 tonnes a year ago. South Aluminum Corporation (SALCO), Iran's one of the four major primary aluminium producers, delivered the best performance, producing 119,886 tonnes of aluminium ingots during the said period. According to some sources, a few Japanese aluminium buyers have agreed to pay a premium of $97 per tonne over the global benchmark price for the shipments during the fourth quarter of 2023, to end on December 31. This, compared to the previous quarter’s premium of $127.5 per tonne , stands 24 per cent down, said four sources directly involved in the pricing talks. World alumina production in August 2023 officially stood at 12.229 million tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month rise for the second month in a row. According to the International Aluminium Institute survey, the output grew by 0.53 per cent in August compared to 12.164 million tonnes in the previous month. The United States alumina imports recorded a sequential rise of 9,000 tonnes or 2.71 per cent in the second quarter of 2023. From 323,000 tonnes in Q1 , the United States alumina imports increased to 332,000 tonnes in Q2, found the US Census Bureau data. According to the International Aluminium Institute, Africa’s primary aluminium production stood at 135,000 tonnes in August 2023 (31 calendar days), accounting for 2.23 per cent of the world’s total output of 6.044 million tonnes. China’s aluminium semis exports tapered down in August due to weak aluminium foils and strips shipments
China’s aluminium semis exports in August 2023 recorded a drop of 9 per cent month-on-month to reach 439,500 tonnes, according to China customs data. On a year-on-year basis, the exports dwindled by 14.6 per cent. The declining trend also reflected in China’s total aluminium semis exports in the first seven months of 2023. According to customs data, the aggregated export volume during January-August stood at 3.52 million tonnes, down by 19 per cent from a year earlier.
