Assan Alüminyum, a leading manufacturer in the flat-rolled aluminium sector, in its recently published "Decarbonization Roadmap 2050", has highlighted its commitment and action plans towards the 2050 net zero carbon emissions goal.
{alcircleadd}Assan Alüminyum has mentioned its sequential strategy towards achieving the net zero goals. To begin with, it aims to curb its present carbon footprint to 7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne by 2030, then to 3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne by 2035, and eventually to reach net zero by 2050.
Action plans towards the goal
As one of Europe's largest aluminium foil producers, the company is steadfast about its sustainability efforts and thus has started making significant investments to drive green projects worth $100 million. The projects include energy and resource efficiency improvements and filtration systems to reduce carbon emissions.
Göksal Güngör, General Manager of Assan Alüminyum, has reminded in the report that the aluminium industry already contributes 2 per cent of global emissions, and without any interventions, the emissions are projected to grow significantly by 2050. To contribute to the global efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, the company has outlined a roadmap with critical steps required to adopt, including transitioning to a low-carbon electrical energy supply and increasing the use of secondary aluminium.
By 2025, Assan Alüminyum also plans to ramp up aluminium recycling practices and increase renewable energy use. The company also strives to develop a low-carbon primary aluminium supply chain to offer green downstream products to end-user sectors.
Assan Alüminyum has started achieving some key sustainability milestones, such as securing $90 million in green financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to support carbon reduction projects. The company has also received the ASI Performance Standard Certification for production and recycling facilities, which further represents its sustainability standards.
Assan Alüminyum, through all these magnificent efforts, sets a benchmark concerning sustainability practices within the global aluminium industry.
