ASI certifies Spanish aluminium can beverage packaging company against Performance & CoC Standard

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

S.A. Damm, a leading aluminium can beverage packaging company in Spain, has reportedly received ASI certifications against Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. Damm is the first beverage company in the world to achieve double certifications, which cover packaging and storage of beer in cans and related activities such as design, packaging, and storage finished products, as well as waste management and storage and the recovery of waste, including packaging waste of the product consumed by the end consumer.

With effect from March 2021, all Damm cans, which are supplied by Ball Corporation, will be certified against ASI standards in response to increasing consumers demand for greater sustainable packaged goods.

Besides recognising production, sourcing and stewardship, ASI certifications have also acknowledge Damm’s commitments towards raising awareness of aluminium recycling, through 349 can compactors every year along the Mediterranean coast.

Commitment to caring for the environmental has formed an integral part of Damm’s corporate culture and is one of the main strategic pillars of the company. To minimise adverse impact on the planet, Damm ensures continuous improvement of industrial processes that use less raw and other materials and takes initiatives to promote energy efficiency in all production centres.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said: “We sincerely congratulate S.A. Damm on becoming the first beverage company to achieve dual ASI Certification for their two beer brewing facilities and the company headquarters in Spain. The Material Stewardship certification provides assurance that the company is addressing the impacts of their aluminium use via can design, scrap recovery in their plants, and support for systems to recover the cans, post-consumer. The company’s canstock sourcing arrangement with Ball, another ASI Member with dual ASI Certification, means that we can hope to see the ASI on-product label on Damm’s brewery products in the near future.”

Jorge Villavecchia, Damm’s general manager, said: “Damm’s commitment to responsible sourcing is at the heart of our ambition to minimise our impact on society and the environment by delivering top-quality products and services. The Damm value chain has a material impact on our sustainability performance and by joining ASI and with the Certification according to Performance Standard and CoC, we will enhance the sustainability credentials of our aluminium beverage cans, ensuring high social, environmental and governance standards. We consider this to be a major milestone that keeps us moving forward on our industry-leading sustainability journey.”

The independent, third-party audits of the S.A. Damm facilities were carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.
