The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has certified each of Hydro's three extrusion operations in Brazil, based on ASI's Performance Standard. The ASI-certified extrusion factories in Brazil are Itu (SP), Tubaro (SC), and Utinga (SP). The factories employ roughly 900 workers in total. ASI assesses many factors to determine whether or not supply chains are increasingly incorporating sustainability and human rights principles.
“This achievement was only possible due a lot of collaboration among our departments and outstanding dedication of many people across the organization. Considering that our plant in Argentina also was just certified, now all our plants in South America have earned the distinction of Performance Standard Certification,” says Sergio L. Vendrasco, vice president accountable for Hydro’s Precision Tubing operations in South America.
With 21,000 people in 40 countries, Hydro Extrusions is the company's largest business unit. It provides customised aluminium components and solutions to a wide range of sectors, including automotive and mass transportation, construction, electronics, offshore, and marine. More than 30,000 clients are served by the business sector across the world.
The Brazilian plants produce about 80,000 tonnes of aluminium profiles per year for industrial clients as well as customers in the building and construction industry. Heat transfer solutions for HVAC and automotive clients are also developed and delivered at the Itu factory.
Hydro Extrusions owns and operates all of the newly approved Brazilian factories. Hydro's bauxite and alumina operations at Paragominas and Alunorte, as well as the principal aluminium plant in Albras, have all been ASI certified for some time.
“I’d like to congratulate each of our teams in Brazil because doing business the right way is what Hydro is all about,” says Paul Warton executive vice president, who leads Hydro’s Extrusions business area.
