Analyst's Research on Alcoa Inc. and Century Aluminum Co. shows uncertain Future for Aluminum
A cloudy Chinese economic forecast in combination with weakness in Europe and slow industrial growth in the U.S. is creating an uncertain outlook for the aluminum industry. Growing demand out of the aerospace and automotive markets as well improved aluminum pricing is encouraging though.

While the future for the industry is unclear, several companies have turned in positive first quarters. Alcoa Inc. posted a $94 million profit in the quarter, an impressive improvement over the previous quarter. Century Aluminum Co. did not do nearly as well, as it posted a loss in the first quarter, but did see an 11% increase in shipments, which was a positive.
Moving forward, barring a significant drop in aluminum pricing, the industry appears capable of widening margins in the short-term but long-term uncertainty regarding future demand is discouraging. Better data out of China's industrial sector would go a long way to assuage some of these concerns.
