Harlingen is a city in Cameron County of the US state Texas will receive an additional work of art, an aluminium 'sphere' of 14 meters high and weighing no less than 45 tonnes by the American artist Frank Stella will be given a place at the parking lot for island tourists and the Tsjerk Hiddesluizen.

The municipality will receive the artwork, called Broken Jug, on loan from Stella. It is now stored in a closed industrial estate and is therefore not accessible to the public. Initially, Harlingen was also supposed to be just a stopover in the journey of the work of art, but it is now definitively given a place in Harlingen.
The sphere resembles an openwork baseball helmet. The artwork was built in Cherbourg, it was originally for a seaside stadium in Miami, but Stella was dissatisfied with the result and so welders in Cherbourg set to work on it. Ultimately, Miami no longer wanted the artwork: it had become way too expensive. They then wanted to keep it in Cherbourg, but the city did not reach an agreement with Stella.
It was then shipped from France to Harlingen. In 2019, Frank Stella was on an on-site visit for the artwork together with Mayor Roel Sluiter.
Frank Stella is an American artist known worldwide for his paintings, three-dimensional works and metal constructions. He has had several exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York.
The agreement with Stella is partly due to the recently deceased Joop Mulder (Sense of Place) and CIG from Groningen. Joop Mulder brought Frank Stella to the Netherlands in 2019 to find a place for the artwork. CIG often builds three-dimensional works for Stella together with Mannen van Staal.
The municipality expects that the artwork can be placed at the end of the summer once studies and permit procedures have been completed.
