According to Aluminum Association, demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (domestic shipments plus imports) was up 1.6 per cent YoY to an estimated 790,000 tonnes in August. YTD semi-fabricated demand stood at 6.1 million tonnes, up 2.3 per cent from the same period of 2017. Shipments of aluminium extruded products increased 2.9 per cent to 240,000 tonnes in August.

However, aluminium extrusion shipment in September registered a drop over August 2018. Shipments of Aluminum Extruded Products (extruded shapes, pipe & tube, and rod & bar) by U.S. and Canadian producers totalled 204,116 tonnes during September 2018, a rise of 1.3 per cent over the September 2017 total of 201,531 tonnes. Compared to the previous month, shipments decreased 7.9 per cent from August 2018. The month on month drop could be related to seasonal drop in extrusion demand in the domestic market.
Year-to-date extrusion shipments through September 2018 totalled 1.9 million tonnes, up 4.4 per cent over the 2017 year-to-date total of 1.8 million tonnes.
