Aluminium louvres adorn unique café cum residence in South Korea

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

A Seoul based South Korean  architect has designed an eye catching café cum residence at Gyeonggi Province which is a beautiful, curved structure covered with slanted planks of aluminium.

The Seoul-based architect, known for his novelty in architecture designing has named the building Louverwall because of its unique aluminium cladding. The louvres cover a glazed wall that faces the street and extends and curves up at one corner to form  the roof of the building.

The aluminium slats actually plays around and controls the sunlight that enters the building to create a beautiful illusion.

"The goal is to have soft daylight in the cafe space, as it is facing due west," said the architects. "We have decided to limit the direct light of the west and bring in the light from the south."

The interior of the café is redesigned beautifully with timber and metal furniture leaving the refurbished concrete structure of the building as it is. The louvres cast distinctive linear shadows across the light-coloured surfaces to create the artistic look.

"The light pours in between the two curved walls, emphasising the verticality of the space," said the studio. "As one walks up the stairs to reach the rest space, one can experience the utmost play of light and shadow, and the verticality."

"The light that changes every minute touches the interior surfaces…Every movement of the clouds, the sun, as well as the changes of season is recorded on the walls," added the designer studio.

The entrances of the building are designed with two pale brick structures– a glazed one for the cafe and a grey door for the house. The residence part of the building is designed using red oak plywood and naked concrete.

The Parametric Louver Design System which is used to create this façade architecture is designed by researchers from Seoul National University that can calculate the best performing louvre form for any surface.
