Aluminium demand in North America up 4.7% YoY in the first four months of 2018; imports up 8.1%

Preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association indicate that the total aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) stood at an estimated 4.3 million tonnes through April 2018, up 4.7% over the same period of 2017. Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products for the same period stood at 3 million tonnes, up 5.6% YoY. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada stood at an estimated 780,630 tonnes in April, up 6.3% over April 2017.

Out of the mill products, shipments of aluminium sheet and plate stood at 940 million pounds, an increase of 5.1%. Extruded product shipments were up 10.2% YoY to 512 million pounds and estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses totalled 657 million pounds in April, an increase of 1% YoY.

Apparent consumption (demand minus exports) in domestic markets stood at an estimated 3.8 million pounds through April 2018, up 2.9% YoY. Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets stood at 940,000 tonnes in April, up 3.1% over April 2017.

Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 521,600 tonnes through April 2018, up 20% over the same period of 2017, while imports were up 8.1% to 1.5 million pounds. Producer inventories stood at 1.45 million tonnes in April, an increase of 1.8% over the March 2018 level of 1.43 million tonnes. Producer inventories were up 10% YoY.

The Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” for May 2018 increased 8.8% over April 2018. Orders for flat roll products (sheet, plate, can stock and foil) rose 10.3% over April 2018, while orders for extruded products were up 1.7% and orders for redraw rod rose 18.9%. Compared to May 2017, total orders increased 6.7%, while on average; orders recorded by domestic producers through May 2018 were up 5.5% over YTD 2017.
