
Preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) stood at an estimated 8.54 million tonnes through August 2018, up 2.5 per cent from the same period of 2017.

YTD demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products was up 2.3 per cent to 6.1 million pounds. Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets was slightly up to an estimated 7.5 million tonnes. Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 1 million tonnes through August, up 17 per cent over the same period of 2017, while imports were off 7 per cent to 2.6 million tonnes.
Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (domestic shipments plus imports) was up 1.6 per cent YoY to an estimated 790,000 tonnes in August. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate were up 1.6 per cent to 436,000 tonnes. Extruded product shipments increased 2.9 per cent to 240,000 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses were up 14.9 per cent to 355,000 tonnes in August.
Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets were up 2.4 per cent YoY to 992,000 tonnes in August. Producer inventories increased 2.6 per cent over July 2018 and 12.7 per cent YoY to 1.6 million tonnes.
