Aluminium associations of America, Europe and Canada publish joint statement urging for fair trade practices

On 22 June, the US Department of Commerce will hold a hearing on the Section 232 investigation on the impact of aluminium imports on US national security.  As a prequel to that the European, American and Canadian aluminium associations published a joint statement.

The Aluminum Association (AA), the Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) and European Aluminium represent all major aluminium producers, fabricators and recyclers in the US, Canada and Europe which employs over 500,000direct jobs and more than 1.5 million indirect jobs.

The three organizations together have drawn attention to global aluminium market imbalance caused in particular by the enormous excess capacity in China, which they consider to be the root cause of the challenges faced by the aluminium industries in North America and in Europe. Overcapacity according to them has encouraged unfair trading practices and disrupted domestic production.

They have urged the governments of the G20 to address global aluminium overcapacity. G7 leaders have already committed to work together for the removal of all unfair trade practices and create a level playing field for aluminium producers, manufacturers and recyclers around the world.

They however have said that the three regions they represent have no unfair competition among them to the disadvantage of one of the industries we represent and have a smooth collaboration. They have insisted that a stable trading environment is beneficial to the aluminium producers from the entire value chain, especially to companies promoting their R&D centers located in the US, Canada and Europe. They have urged their governments not to hamper the positive effects of trade in their regions.

They also have said that the three regions also want to cooperate and trade more on a global scale. The Chinese excess capacities, they feel, should be the main focus in these three regions including all effective remedies that target this issue that is distorting global aluminium trade.

They have urged for a fair system and a level playing field for their regional aluminium value chains. They have also encouraged the governments to take enforceable actions that address aluminium overcapacity to benefit all aluminium producers and consumers worldwide.
