On 20th October 2022, the Aluminum Association, the aluminium industry's leading voice in the United States of America, released the updated environmental product declarations (EPDs) that show reductions in the environmental impact of aluminium product types including primary aluminium ingot, recycled aluminium ingot, aluminium extrusion products and aluminium sheet products.

An EPD is a comprehensive, internationally harmonized report describing a product's potential environmental impact through its life cycle. Companies using EPDs in the building and construction industry make informed decisions about what products to use.
Charles Johnson, the President & CEO of the Aluminum Association, said, “Aluminum produced in North America is more sustainable than ever. The domestic industry has cut the carbon footprint of aluminium production by half over the past 30 years. These new EPDs help us tell this story to customers and other stakeholders.”
Since the EPDs were first released in 2014, sustainability advancements have resulted in better environmental performance across all aluminium product types, including increased use of renewable energy for primary aluminium smelting and improved efficiency in downstream manufacturing processes. Aluminium supports innovative designs that optimize energy efficiency and support renewable energy use when used in buildings. Aluminium end users in the building and construction industry can make informed decisions about the metal based on these declarations. Specifically, EPDs help earns LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design)® credit points for green building certification under LEED® V4.
According to the EPD reports, average U.S. and Canadian production performance is based on industrywide survey data. EPD reports were verified by UL Solutions – the leading firm in verifying North American EPDs – and developed in accordance with ISO 14025:2006 reporting standards.
