In a world increasingly reliant on lithium-ion batteries, concerns over safety have escalated due to the potential for thermal runaway events, which can lead to fires. However, Gladstone-based critical minerals company Alpha HPA is spearheading a path-changing solution.

"Alpha's solution marks a pivotal advancement in lithium-ion battery safety," asserts Rimas Kairaitis, Managing Director of Alpha HPA. "Our breakthrough technology mitigates thermal runaway events, safeguarding against the alarming rise in battery-related fires."

Kairaitis elucidates, "Lithium-ion batteries operate on controlled oxidation reactions, but adverse conditions or subpar materials can trigger rapid and uncontrollable reactions, leading to thermal runaway. Our solution offers a critical safety net."

Alpha HPA's breakthrough leverages Smart SX solvent extraction and HPA refining technology to produce ultra-pure aluminium nitrate. This proprietary process, building upon a foundation laid by BTR New Materials, enables the application of a protective layer of aluminium oxide on battery anodes.

Addressing commercialisation challenges and defining prospects

"Until now, the lack of high-purity aluminium nitrate has hindered the commercialisation of this technology," notes Kairaitis. "Through Alpha's Smart SX technology, we've overcome this barrier, facilitating large-scale production at competitive prices."

Having conducted extensive testing and engaged with industry stakeholders, Alpha HPA is poised to commercialise its groundbreaking technology. With discussions underway with 13 anode manufacturers and developers, the prospect of safer batteries looms closer than ever.
