Alcoa inks an 8-year alumina supply agreement with EGA

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Alcoa and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) have signed one of the largest alumina supply contracts, which can help in strengthening the long-term supply relationship between the two companies. Under the new multi-year deal, Alcoa will be providing EGA with smelting quality alumina, making the former EGA's biggest third-party alumina supplier.

Volume options will enable EGA to purchase up to 15.6 million tonnes of alumina from Western Australia for the eight-year arrangement, which begins in 2024. The supply deal will account for a substantial share of Alcoa's annual third-party alumina sales. In 2022, EGA's Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi met 47 per cent of EGA's total alumina demand.

"Most of our alumina needs into the next decade are now secured by our own production and a long-term supplier in Alcoa that is aligned with our sustainability goals. This agreement will further strengthen EGA's platform for future growth," stated Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, EGA's Chief Executive Officer.

"Alcoa operates the world's largest third-party alumina business with low-carbon processes, and we're proud to be recognized with this significant additional volume from EGA as a leading global producer. The agreement is the largest alumina supply contract ever signed between Alcoa and EGA, and it will strengthen the long-term supply relationship between our two companies," said Alcoa President and CEO Roy Harvey.

Global Aluminium Industry - key Trends to 2030

The deal allows EGA to use Alcoa's low-carbon EcoSource™ alumina, the aluminium industry's only low-carbon alumina brand. EcoSource emits no more than 0.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) per tonne of alumina (scope one and scope 2), which is half the industry average of 1.2 tonnes of CO2e. This assessment covers direct and indirect emissions from the company's bauxite mining and alumina refining activities.
