Alcoa Corporation, a global leader in the aluminium industry, has announced the appointment of Matt Reed as its Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, effective January 1, 2024.
Matt Reed's background and responsibilities
Matt Reed, currently the Vice President of Operations for Australia and President of Alcoa of Australia, will be based in Western Australia. With over 25 years of experience in the resource sector, including mining and minerals processing, Reed brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role.
As Chief Operations Officer, Reed will lead Alcoa's global operations, overseeing bauxite mines, alumina refineries, and aluminium smelters. His responsibilities will encompass operational excellence, focusing on safety, environmental management, productivity, cost management, and long-term strategic planning.
Leadership change at Alcoa
Reed's appointment comes as part of a leadership transition at Alcoa. He will be succeeding William F. Oplinger, who assumed the role of Alcoa's Chief Executive in September 2023.
Speaking highly of Reed, Oplinger emphasised his leadership strength and ability to drive a high-performance culture. Reed is expected to build on his past accomplishments, fostering increased stability while managing various complex initiatives.
In a press release, Oplinger said, "Matt is a very strong leader who will help us drive a high-performance culture across our assets. He is guided by integrity and a passion for building capable and motivated teams. He will build on the work he’s already accomplished, driving increased stability while successfully managing a range of complex initiatives."
Plans and interim appointments
In anticipation of Reed's assumption of the new role, Alcoa plans to appoint an interim Vice President for Australian operations in January. Additionally, a competitive search process will be initiated to name a permanent replacement for Reed in due course.
Alcoa, in its ongoing commitment to operational excellence and strategic decision-making, looks to navigate challenges, capitalise on opportunities, and position itself for long-term success under the leadership of Matt Reed as Chief Operations Officer.
