Alba’s Transformative ESG Journey

Starting as a 120,000 tonnes per annum smelter in 1971, Alba, today, is the world’s largest aluminium smelter ex-China with a production of more than 1.561 million metric tonnes per annum (2021).

In addition to molten metal, Alba produces a diverse range of superior Value-Added Products (VAP) -- Foundry grade re-melt products (T-Ingots, 10 Kg Standard Ingots, 22.5 Kg Standard Ingots, and 9.7 Kg Properzi Bars), Rolling Ingots (Slabs), Extrusion Ingots (Billets), Unalloyed P1020 remelt products (T-Ingots, 10 Kg Standard Ingots, 22.5 Kg Standard Ingots, and Sows). Our output – including liquid metal, customised alloys and a variety of surface finishes – goes to the local downstream industries as well as more than 240 global customers through Alba’s sales offices in Bahrain, Europe (Zurich), Asia (Hong Kong & Singapore) and subsidiary office in the U.S. In addition, globally-recognized certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, ISO 45001, IATF 16949:2016 and ASI Performance Standard Certification and Ecovadis attest to Alba’s actions to produce aluminium responsibly and sustainably.

Over the last five decades, Alba has been a major contributor to the social, industrial, and economic development of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Company is at the heart of a thriving aluminium sector (including the aluminium downstream segment), which accounts for 12% of the Kingdom’s GDP. Renowned for being an employer of choice, Alba is a model in Employee Training and Development and employs over 3,100 people across its operations of which 84% are Bahraini nationals (2021).

The safety of its employees and contractors’ workforce is Alba’s top priority. Over the years, the Company has maintained an excellent track record in Safety and Health for which it has won prestigious international awards such as the RoSPA Award 2021 (9 years in a row) and International Safety Award with Merit from British Safety Council in 2020.

We have invested in landmark projects that will lead to value-creation and sustainable development for the communities.

• Alba commissioned its US$37.5 million zero-waste Spent Pot Lining Plant, which is the first of its kind in the Region. With an annual capacity of 35,000 tonnes of SPL, it transforms the treated SPL into a valuable product for the cement industry.
• With a view to diversify its energy sources and adopt clean energy, Alba’s Solar Farm project will have a capacity to produce 5 to 7 MW and cover an approximate surface area of 37,000 sq. mts. spread over operational areas, car parks and Alba Club.
• Alba has signed MoUs with several locals, regional, and international companies such as Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA Ltd. and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to accelerate Alba’s Sustainability Roadmap.

Alba has been recognized internationally for its strong values and operating excellence, with the most recent ones being top ESG performer in Bahrain by ESG Invest; Safeguard Label from Bureau Veritas; and Best Corporate Governance Award by Ethical Boardroom.
