EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

People of Cairo in Egypt are receiving money in exchange of their recyclable material in order to cut down the landfill waste in the city and to clean the street. A price chart for the recyclable item have been written on the kiosks which states that one kilogramme of aluminium cans cost 9 Egyptian pounds ($0.5011).

The two Kiosks have been installed in the Cairo neighbourhood of Heliopolis. They are buying aluminium cans, glass, paper and plastic from the residents. The kiosks compress the collected items and again sell it to the factories for reuse.

Cairo Governor Atef Abdelhamid said, “The idea is simply to give value to garbage, so instead of throwing it out people can benefit from it and that helps us keep our streets clean."

The governor said that the authorities will evaluate the success of the project in the coming days. After the evaluation, the authorities will install more kiosks in the city. The initiative was first organised by two members of Egypt's parliament.

"We hope to reach a point where people will do this without the monetary incentive, but this is the start,” said Nermine Talaat, who manages one of the kiosks.

According to one of the seller, “It’s a great initiative and the money encourages us and our children to collect these items instead of throwing them out."
