Aluminium is referred to as a ‘green metal’ due to its environment-friendly nature and infinite recyclable properties. IAI claims that about 75 per cent of aluminium ever produced is still in the material loop, creating a circular economy. The advent of the Paris Act 2015 has urged major aluminium players to turn their production process into a sustainable one that reduces carbon emissions in the long run. This includes companies adopting renewable energy and decarbonizing their entire value chain. Aluminium, a 100 per cent recyclable non-ferrous metal, helps to create a closed material cycle which is beneficial for a company as there is no material loss during production. AL Circle has put together the latest report on “ Sustainability in the Global Aluminium Industry ” to present a...

Rio Tinto, a well-known mining corporation in Australia, has recently announced a significant profit from its aluminium smelter located in Bluff. The holding company for Rio Tinto's 79% share in the smelter, Pacific Aluminium, has recorded an "underlying" profit of $122 million for the year ending in December, benefiting from high aluminium prices. This profit, although lower compared to the previous year's $140 million due to the soaring aluminium prices caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, marks a significant turnaround from the $100 million underlying loss reported in 2020. Rio Tinto is currently in talks with power companies to extend the smelter's operation beyond next year when its prevailing low-cost power-supply contracts with Meridian and Contact Energy expire. Pacific...

Some of the important first-time achievements in the aluminium industry are: Transportation sector : The BMW Group is leading the way in the circular economy with the world's first fully electric MINI Cooper SE...

Aluminium is a leader in the circular economy. Because it is 100% recyclable, it retains its original qualities no matter how often it is treated. And there is no doubt that aluminium cans, in this circular economy, are the most environmentally friendly beverage packaging options. Aluminium cans have a higher recycling rate and can be made with a higher percentage of recycled metal than other types of packaging. Because it is durable, stackable, and lightweight, businesses can send more drinks while reducing their environmental impact. So what is a circular economy? Circular Economy is a concept for solving system-level concerns such as pollution, waste, biodiversity loss, and climate change. The only way to make the economy more sustainable is to move away from the current...

The 28th CRU World Aluminium Conference 2023, co-hosted by ASI and IAI, which took place on 16-18th May 2023, was co-hosted by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). During the discussion, the aluminium industry was noted for its need to reduce emissions quickly and achieve environmental and climate goals. Recognising that 2030 is rapidly approaching, concrete initiatives are required to fulfil global climate and environmental commitments. Adopting digitalisation may help enable development, but it is necessary to emphasise that data access alone is inadequate. In a session moderated by ASI CEO Dr Fiona Solomon, speakers from the aluminium value chain and civil society leaders explored how it is critical to address sustainability...

Dr Nigel Clarke, the Minister of Finance and Public Service, insists that it would not have been economically viable for the Jamaican government to take over the responsibility of 100 per cent operations of Jamalco, the bauxite mining and alumina refining company, after the previous majority shareholder, Noble Holdings, sold its 55 per cent stake in the company for US$ 1 following it went into financial stress. While responding to questions raised by Phillip Paulwell, the Opposition Spokesman on Energy and Mining, during the sitting of the House of Representatives in May, said that while the government considered an entire investment in the company rather than its 45 per cent stake, it would have been too risky. He said, "We would have looked at that as a possibility. However, with our...
