Saudi Arabia’s aluminium consumption could climb to as much as 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, as the Kingdom ramps up infrastructure and industrial development ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...
The story of the aluminium industry is starting a chapter wherein scrap availability, recycling technology, trade policy, carbon costs and demand growth are becoming increasingly interconnected. From the US and Canada to Europe, India, New Zealand and China, recent developments show that the global aluminium supply chain is being reshaped on several fronts at once. These developments point to a changing aluminium business model: access to metal alone may no longer be enough. Quality of recycled feedstock, domestic processing capacity, carbon intensity, trade exposure and the ability to meet increasingly specific customer requirements could become equally important competitive factors. The European Union’s hallmark policy in the view of equitable trade and environment protection—the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)—seems fair on the surface, as long as its framework remains focused on preventing carbon leakage and blocking the influx of cheap, high-emission goods into the domestic market. Under CBAM, a carbon price is levied on imported goods, aligned with the carbon costs EU producers incur under the Emission Trading System (ETS). That sounds like a just deal for domestic producers, ensuring a level playing field. But what about EU-headquartered companies that relocated their operations abroad to escape carbon taxes? Here's where the issue arises as these companies will be required to purchase certificates that reflect the carbon emissions embedded in their...

SPIROL has expanded its range of aluminium press-in inserts by introducing new options made from 2024 aluminium. These additions, available in symmetrical (INS 50) and headed (INS 51) versions, complement the company's existing line of brass inserts. Image Source: SPIROL Threaded inserts are critical in strengthening plastic components and providing durable, reusable threads in bolted assemblies. They help maintain consistent seating torque and prevent plastic creep over time, which can otherwise undermine assembly integrity. Engineered for optimal performance and cost-efficiency, SPIROL's inserts come in various styles to suit different installation methods and application demands. The INS 50 and INS 51 series are designed for cold press-in installation, eliminating the need for heat and...

In a bold step to boost the recycling of post-consumer aerosols (PCR), a three-month pilot project was kicked off on 2 June across Solihull in the West Midlands, England. Designed to uncover how aerosols are handled in household waste, the initiative will analyse kerbside collection data to paint a clearer picture of recycling habits. Spearheaded by Alupro through the UK Aerosol Recycling Initiative (UKARI) and delivered in partnership with SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK, the project involves a deep dive into fully comingled waste streams. The analysis will be carried out by Sherbourne Recycling, home to one of the most advanced materials recovery facilities in the world. The key focus will be tracking how many aerosol containers are captured, sorted, and recycled, laying the groundwork...

With the United States slapping a steep 50 per cent tariff on Canadian steel and aluminium imports, Ottawa is now fast-tracking a self-sufficient economic response potent to reshape North America’s metals supply chain. At the centre of this pivot is a proposed ‘Buy Canadian’ policy, an industrial safeguard designed to protect Canadian producers and preserve jobs by mandating the use of domestic metal in government procurement contracts. Image for representational purposes only (Source: https://policyoptions.irpp.org/) Industry Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed this week that the government is actively considering procurement requirements for both infrastructure and defence projects that would prioritise Canadian-made metals. “These decisions are being taken as we speak,” Joly said,...

China remains the frontrunner in clean industry development, securing a quarter of the USD 250 billion of investment in clean plants to date, closely followed by the US at 22 per cent and the EU at 14 per cent. But a bloc of emerging markets including India, Egypt and Brazil, part of the ‘new industrial sunbelt’, is quickly catching up to countries with historic industrial bases, according to new data from the Global Project Tracker and accompanying report published today by Mission Possible Partnership (MPP). The ‘big three’ industrial leaders may soon be overtaken by a host of newly industrialising countries capitalising on favourable conditions for renewable energy production and building momentum in sectors at the forefront of a new clean industrial revolution. This shift points to a...

A confluence of factors like increased retail sales in China, muted inventories, and surge in bauxite prices has propelled the LME aluminium benchmark price to USD 2,530 per tonne, marking a new high since the beginning of the second quarter of 2025. Image source: London Metal Exchange Retail sales in China have surged at an unexpectedly strong pace, indicating that economic uncertainty has had little to no dampening effect on consumer demand. Despite facing approximately 165 per cent tariffs on aluminium from the United States, China continues to maintain strong momentum in its retail sector. That’s not all. China’s improved purchase management index (PMI) for the aluminium processing industry to 49.8 per cent in May, recording an 8.7 per cent year-on-year increase, has contributed to...
