Saudi Arabia’s domestic aluminium demand could rise to 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently, according to Maaden’s executive vice president for aluminium, Ahmad al-Alshaikh. He expects that demand could potentially double over the next five to seven years. Speaking at the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest on Wednesday, al-Alshaikh said demand could potentially reach between 1.6 million and 1.8 million tonnes by the end of the decade. Al-Alshaikh linked the expected growth to construction activity in Saudi Arabia, including projects connected with the country hosting major expositions and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is expected to require 15 new stadiums, adding to demand for aluminium and other materials. Maaden...

Do you know that recycling a single tonne of aluminium can prevent up to 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to the production from raw materials? As the race toward net-zero accelerates, recycled aluminium has moved from the sidelines to become a cornerstone of a resource-efficient, low-carbon future. In fact, a lot of primary aluminium producers and smelters are now investing more in the secondary aluminium business. Why are primary smelters investing more in secondary aluminium? The secondary aluminium market, long led by specialised players such as Novelis, Real Alloy, and regional recyclers, is undergoing a profound transformation. Major primary producers, including EGA, Ma'aden, Hydro, Rio Tinto, and others, are stepping into the arena, strengthening their foothold through greenfield...

Starting May 31, 2025, the electricity prices for newly commissioned renewable energy projects in China will be entirely determined by competitive bidding, with government subsidies being completely phased out. Key policy elements Full market integration: All renewable electricity will be traded in the market, with no mandatory purchase requirements for power grids. Subsidy elimination: Government subsidies will be phased out. Dual-track mechanism: A "market-based pricing + price difference settlement" model will be adopted to ensure stable revenues for renewable energy projects. Four key Q&As: 1. Why is renewables full marketisation five years ahead of schedule? Capacity milestone: China hit its 2030 wind and solar power installed capacity target six years early, with renewables...

What could be a viable solution for the United States to meet its current aluminium demand when the country is suffering from a domestic primary aluminium production shortage and high import costs due to a 50 per cent tariff on the metal? Recycling it is ! Rightfully, Trond Olaf Christophersen, chief financial officer of Hydro, has pointed out, “If the US administration wants to improve self-reliance on aluminium, the quickest way to do it will be to keep more of the scrap in the US and support recycling capacity.” Recycling – the answer to demand-production mismatch By the end of 2025, the United States primary aluminium demand is projected to reach 4.9 million tonnes. Yet until April 2025, the country’s production stood at only 222,000 tonnes, down by 2.2 per cent from 227,000 tonnes...

India's ADC12 alloy imports saw a sharp downturn in imports during H1CY'25, with volumes slumping 87 percent to 1,511 tonnes (t) from 11,811 t in H1CY'24. Instead, aluminium scrap imports swelled by 9 percent y-o-y to 0.88 million tonnes (mnt) in H1CY'25 from 0.81 mnt in H1CY'24. This growth was largely due to India compensating for the steep reduction in ADC12 alloy imports. BigMint goes behind the scenes. Why did ADC12 alloy imports plummet in H1CY'25? Malaysia, historically India's leading source of ADC12 alloy products, recorded a sharp drop in shipments during H1CY'25. This was the primary contributor to the significantly lower ADC12 imports in H1CY'25. Imports fell by 87 percent to 1,188 t, compared to 9,417 t in H1CY'24. The decline was primarily attributed to delays in obtaining...

The strike began in late July and intensified this week amid disputes over working conditions and benefits between Rusal Friguia and its employees. The labour action started on July 28, when more than 100 workers at the Friguia alumina refinery in Friguia Prefecture, Boké Region, took to the streets to protest the company's...

According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium industry in July 2025 rebounded by 0.7 percentage points M-o-M from June to 42.2 per cent, with a Y-o-Y increase of 2.8 per cent. Orders for secondary aluminium in July performed better than expected. Firstly, orders from sectors such as NEVs and motorcycle parts were robust, supporting orders for some enterprises. Secondly, after the listing of cast aluminium alloy futures, futures and spot traders acquired large quantities of delivery brand or non-delivery brand ADC12, which to some extent hedged against the decline in downstream orders for enterprises and mitigated the fluctuations of traditional peak and off-seasons. Since August, market demand has weakened somewhat, with enterprises focusing mainly on...
