Genesis, the upscale spinoff of Hyundai Motors is preparing to launch the 2021 G80 and GV80 in the United States.
The company's third-generation rear-wheel-drive platform is the basis of the G80 and GV80 and using this architecture in the GV80, Genesis was able to give the SUV a low profile, a wide stance, and a spacious interior.
Genesis takes particular pride in the fact that the GV80 is one of the low-end vehicles in the segment, which means that it has a low centre of gravity as well as a low seating position which gives occupants plenty of room in the vehicle. Of course, the GV80 was also designed to be exceptionally safe, hence the reason Genesis uses four types of steel and aluminium throughout its construction.
The use of aluminium also has the added benefit of reducing weight. According to the automaker, using aluminium on the doors, bonnet and tailgate saves 115 kg compared to other steel components it could have used.
Using its third-generation rear-wheel-drive platform for the G80, Genesis was able to increase tensile strength by 6% over the previous G80. The luxury sedan also has 42% more hot-stamped parts than before, including the A and B pillars, floor cross members, and sills.
The 2021 Genesis G80 also uses die-cast aluminium front and rear shock towers, additional horizontal brace and a rear sub-frame that includes rear seat stays and larger bushings further enhance stiffness and NVH characteristics.
Genesis intended to start US sales of the GV80 and G80 this summer, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the duo was pushed back until late fall. Prices for the GV80 start at $ 48,900 while the G80 will be available from $ 47,700.
