1PointFive’s STRATOS facility extends CDR credits to Trafigura under the Direct Air Capture deal

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

To echo the resonance of progress within the aluminium industry, 1PointFive, a trailblazer in carbon capture technology, and Trafigura, a leader in the global commodities realm, have forged a strategic alliance. Trafigura, as a Founding Member of the First Movers Coalition, undertakes its inaugural transaction, securing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from 1PointFive's pioneering Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility, STRATOS, currently unfurling its industrial prowess in Texas.

This symbiotic venture aligns seamlessly with Trafigura's ambitious commitment to procure a minimum of 50,000 tonnes of robust and scalable net carbon dioxide removal credits by 2030. At its core, this collaboration signifies a profound endorsement of early-stage technologies, emphasizing the paramount role of DAC in furnishing high-quality carbon removal credits. This landmark agreement not only signifies Trafigura's patronage of innovative carbon removal solutions but also establishes a lasting rapport between 1PointFive and Trafigura, poised to propel DAC into the forefront of practical, transparent, and enduring carbon removal.

Amidst the grandeur of technological innovation, STRATOS emerges as a titan, designed to capture up to an awe-inspiring 500,000 metric tonnes of CO2 annually, ultimately earning its stripes as the largest facility of its kind across the globe. The envisaged scale of this venture finds resonance in Trafigura's commitment to supporting advanced removal projects, a strategic move contributing to the mitigation of emissions in the hard-to-abate sectors. Notably, the captured CO2, underpinning Trafigura's removal credits, will find a secure abode through the resilient subsurface saline sequestration.

Industry stalwarts, in their own words

The President and General Manager of 1PointFive, Michael Avery, articulates the essence of this collaboration, rooted in a shared commitment to climate responsibility. “Our work with Trafigura is rooted in a shared commitment to the climate and an understanding of the critical role that durable carbon removal, specifically Direct Air Capture, plays in helping organizations address their carbon footprint. We are excited about this agreement because it establishes our collaboration with a global commodities firm focused on reducing emissions across the value chain,” Avery exclaimed.

The Global Head of Carbon Trading for Trafigura, Hannah Hauman, seconds this sentiment, expressing delight in the collaboration with 1PointFive. “We are delighted to collaborate with 1PointFive as we expand our global customer offering for hard-to-abate sectors. Supporting the development of large-scale removals projects demonstrates our commitment to advancing carbon sequestration technologies, underpinning demand today to enable the scaling of production for tomorrow,” Hannah pointed out.

How will the CO2 capture advancement aid the aluminium sector in the future?

In the world of aluminium, where energy-intensive processes shape the international primary aluminium sector and reverberate through the global aluminium value chain, the integration of cutting-edge carbon capture technology assumes a transformative role. The strategic collaboration between 1PointFive and Trafigura signals a paradigm shift in the aluminium industry's approach to sustainability. This alliance sets a precedent for the industry's focus on reducing its carbon footprint and upholding a more sustainable aluminium industry internationally.
