AL in ALL #18: Heesen unveils $50M aluminium superyacht Sophia

Heesen’s latest project, Sophia, is a game-changer in the luxury yacht world. This 50-meter, all-aluminium superyacht combines cutting-edge design, performance and sustainability. Set for delivery in June 2026, Sophia is a standout in both luxury and functionality.

Advanced aluminium construction for superior performance

Aluminium’s high strength-to-weight ratio is one of the key factors behind Sophia‘s incredible performance. Heesen’s choice of this material ensures the yacht remains lightweight yet strong, giving it impressive stability and durability. The yacht weighs just under 500 GT, a feat made possible by the use of aluminium, which also aids in fuel efficiency and long-range cruising capabilities.

Optimised hull design for shallow water exploration

One of Sophia‘s most striking features is its shallow draft of just 2.15 meters. This allows the yacht to explore more remote locations, from the tranquil Bahamas to exclusive Mediterranean coves. The advanced hard-chine hull with recessed propeller tunnels not only boosts stability but also enhances fuel efficiency, promising a 12% improvement over conventional designs.

High-speed engines with impressive range

Sophia boasts twin MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 23 knots. Despite its size, the yacht delivers an impressive transatlantic range of 3,100 nautical miles at a comfortable cruising speed of 11 knots. Heesen has also prioritised sustainability with compliance to IMO Tier III emissions standards, ensuring Sophia emits 70-80% less NOx compared to older yachts.

Luxurious interiors with cutting-edge features

Step below deck and Sophia reveals a world of luxury. Designed in Heesen’s in-house cabinetry facility in Winterswijk, the yacht features spacious leisure areas, including a shallow pool with floating sun loungers. The beach club, optimised for water activities, offers ample storage for wakeboards and bikes. A fold-down platform and sliding windbreaker enhance the yacht’s versatility, making it ideal for any cruising condition.

Aluminium’s role in luxury and sustainability

Sophia showcases aluminium’s role as the ideal material for combining high-end luxury with environmental responsibility. The eco-friendly features of this superyacht extend beyond its performance, with the use of aluminium supporting better energy efficiency and durability while reducing the environmental impact compared to traditional materials.

Delivery set for June 2026 – A new era for superyachts

As Heesen prepares for the delivery of Sophia in June 2026, the superyacht promises to set new standards in both performance and luxury. This high-performance vessel proves that aluminium continues to be the go-to material for cutting-edge designs in the marine industry.
