Guinea targets 8Mt of alumina capacity by 2030: Can its power grid deliver 5k–10k MW?
After introducing its annual bauxite export cap at 150 million tonnes in June 2026 , Guinea is now accelerating its alumina refining ambitions, with three refineries under construction and a target of five operating by 2030. However, the country’s electricity generation of around 1,000 MW falls well short of the estimated 5,000–10,000 MW needed to support industrialisation, putting energy infrastructure at the centre of its bauxite-to-alumina strategy. Daouda Diakite, Senior Adviser to Guinea’s Minister of Mines and Geology, Bouna Sylla, outlined the plans at African Mining Week in Cape Town. Mozal aluminium shutdown cuts 30% of South32 output, triggers $117m charge
South32 has recognised exceptional costs of USD 117 million after the closure of its Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique , as an unresolved power deal impasse with the Mozambican government keeps operations stalled. The Mozal smelter, one of Africa’s largest aluminium producers with a 560,000-tonne annual capacity, entered care and maintenance on March 15 after negotiations over electricity tariffs failed. South32 has maintained that aluminium production is no longer commercially viable under the current power pricing structure, with electricity accounting for the plant’s highest operating cost. Mozambique confirms talks over future of Mozal aluminium smelter
The Mozambican government said negotiations are under way regarding the future of the Mozal aluminium smelter, the country's largest industrial operation. The facility has been under care and maintenance since March after operations were halted over concerns about rising electricity costs. Government spokesperson Salim Valá confirmed that discussions are taking place with interested parties but declined to provide details, saying the process is still ongoing. The update comes after South32, the majority owner of Mozal, said it is reviewing different options for the smelter. The company has a 63.7 per cent stake in the project and has not ruled out a future restart if conditions improve. Noranda Aluminum Holding Corporation announced today the hiring of Julio Costa as President of the Company's Bauxite and Alumina business. Noranda also announced that Mike Griffin, the Company's Vice President of Manufacturing, has been named President of the Primary Aluminum business. Bahrain's Midal Cables opens $65 mln aluminium factory in Mozambique
Bahrain's Midal Cables said on Wednesday it had spent $65 million to construct an aluminium factory in the Mozambican capital that will export to other African countries. The plant, situated near Mozambique's Mozal aluminum smelter, has an annual output capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes and will produce rods, wires and conductors for countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. "It's a strategic decision because Africa is a priority market for our group," managing director Hamid Al Zayani said. "Mozambique is an excellent platform for us to serve key markets in Africa." BHP’s aluminium production dips in the second half of 2014
BHP’s aluminium production has seen a 16% dip in the second half of 2014 dropping to 517,000 tonnes while its alumina and manganese ore productions have risen. In the December quarter, a drop of 15% year-on-year and a 1.9% quarter-on-quarter was noticed with the company producing 256,000 tonnes of aluminium. The low production numbers are directly related to the number of suspensions and cut-backs of aluminium capacities in the second half of 2014 in many BHP smelters including Alumar in Brazil and Bayside in South Africa while Mozal in Mozambique had a record production in the same period. Mozal is largest company in Mozambique in 2013
The Mozal aluminium foundry is once again the largest company in Mozambique, a position it has held for more than a decade, according to the list of Mozambique’s 100 Largest Companies in Mozambique by auditing firm KPMG Mozambique. Based on the results for 2013, the KPMG study shows that Mozal posted turnover of 32.3 billion meticais (US$997 million), a decrease of 6.8 percent. Oil company Petróleos de Moçambique (Petromoc) is in second place with turnover of 18.8 billion meticais.
