Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that IKD Co., Ltd. and Ningbo IKD Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd have each achieved certification against the ASI Performance Standard V3 with Provisional status. The facilities produce automotive precision aluminium alloy die castings, with processes including die-casting, deburring, fine machining, inspection, and packaging. The current annual production capacity of the IKD Co., Ltd. facility is 350 million pieces of various aluminium alloy casting products, and Ningbo IKD Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd currently produces 10 million.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 and ASI CoC Standard V2 were launched in May 2022 following a multi-year revision process. The ASI Performance Standard V3 defines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three sustainability pillars – Environment, Social, and Governance – with the aim to address pressing sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Provisional Certification serves as a strategic and flexible approach for aluminium sector actors to gain access to ASI’s sustainability standards framework, learn, and improve their practices over a defined period. It provides an opportunity for Members to commence their ASI Certification journey, while requiring a commitment to move towards Full Certification as soon as is practically possible.

The independent, third-party audits of IKD Co., Ltd. and Ningbo IKD Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd were carried out by Bureau Veritas Certification. A full listing of audit findings is available in the audit reports, linked below. During the audits of both facilities, 13 minor non-conformances were noted under Criteria 1.1 Legal Compliance, 2.1a-f Environmental, Social, and Governance Policy, 2.4a-e Responsible Sourcing, 4.4d Collection and Recycling of Products at End of Life, 5.1a-b Disclosure of GHG Emissions and Energy Use, 5.4 GHG Emissions Management, 6.3a-g Assessment and Management of Spills and Leakages, 6.5a-c Waste Management and Reporting, 9.1a-d Human Rights Due Diligence, 9.2a-e Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment, 9.7a-h Affected Populations and Organisations, 9.8b Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas - Identify and assess risks and 11.1a Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System. Two major non-conformances were identified under Criteria 5.3a-e GHG Emissions Reduction Plans and 10.8a-c Working Time, resulting in a Certification with Provisional status of one year. IKD Co., Ltd. and Ningbo IKD Technology Industry Development Co., Ltd will be implementing corrective actions, to be verified in their respective follow-up audits. Bureau Veritas Certification approved the corrective action plans for the Major non-conformances prior to submission of the audit reports to ASI.
