Yantai Port's growing role in China's bauxite and aluminium supply chain has come into focus after its Dezhou-Longkou-Yantai rail freight corridor surpassed 10 million tonnes of total cargo. The milestone was reached as 3,200 tonnes of African bauxite moved from the Shandong port to an aluminium processing plant in Shanxi province.

The bauxite shipment departed Yantai Port on September 29, travelling along a railway network that stretches roughly 1,000 kilometres and connects the coastal port with inland industrial markets.

The corridor now serves 25 destinations across five provinces and regions - Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia. Six destinations are located in Shandong, while 19 are in other provinces.

The scale of the network has expanded alongside its cargo volumes. Weekly freight train services have increased from fewer than 20 when the corridor was launched to more than 60, giving industries inland access to imported bulk commodities arriving through Yantai Port.

Bauxite is among the commodities moving through the network, alongside phosphate rock, iron ore, coal and coke. For China's aluminium industry, the rail connection provides a route for imported bauxite to reach inland processing facilities.

Yantai Port has also expanded its logistics offering as the rail network has grown. Its customised services include a single-document model through which customers can arrange transportation, receive quotations and settle payments through one process.

The expansion is strengthening Yantai Port's position as a logistics link between overseas commodity supplies and China's inland industrial markets, while giving bulk cargo a wider rail connection beyond the coastal port.
