Waste recycling machines at Hyderabad International Airport to recycle aluminium cans

Waste recycling is to start right at the moment a passenger lands at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which operates the airport, is readying to install waste recycling machines to motivate people to recycle used aluminium beverage cans, steel cans, PET bottles and plastic bags before they leave the place for their individual destinations.

As a pilot project, two waste recycling machines will be installed at strategic locations within the airport premises, GHIAL officials said.

RGIA was the first airport to install its own composting plant, which processes food waste generated at the airport. Now the airport is installing its own packaging and aluminium can recycling machines- the first of its kind endeavour in the country.

The project is part of the airport's signature #PassengerisPrime programme, started to inspire people to contribute towards a cleaner and sustainable environment.

Passengers thereby will get an option to either donate or claim a discount coupon against submission of their empty aluminium cans, plastic water bottles and bags into the crushing machine, GHIAL confirmed.

"We are optimistic that people would feel motivated to use the machines and display their commitment towards the environment. Managing waste responsibly can help us contribute towards building a cleaner and safer India," said SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL.
