Vedanta expands accessibility initiative across Odisha, supporting people with disabilities and the elderly

Vedanta Aluminium has expanded its assistive support initiative across Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts in Odisha, extending accessibility support to people with disabilities and elderly residents as part of its wider community development programme.

The latest phase of the initiative covered Jamkhani, Girisima, Jharpalam, R&R Colony Mendra, Garjanjore, Bileimunda, Chhatabar and Ghogharpalli, where 19 wheelchairs were distributed to identified beneficiaries. Similar support had previously been provided in Kuraloi.

49 beneficiaries supported

With the latest distribution, 49 beneficiaries have now received wheelchairs and hearing aids aimed at improving mobility, accessibility and participation in everyday life.

Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines CEO Amaresh Kumar said the initiative reflects the company's commitment to addressing community needs through practical and inclusive measures.

"By providing assistive support, Vedanta aims to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and elderly community members, enabling them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives," he said.

Community partnership

The distribution programme was carried out with the participation of local representatives, including Garjanjore Sarpanch Sunanda Kalo, Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and community members to help identify beneficiaries and ensure the support reached those most in need.

Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, saying the assistive devices had improved mobility and made it easier to access essential services and carry out daily activities independently.

Part of broader community development

The accessibility programme forms part of Vedanta Aluminium's wider social development initiatives around its coal mining operations in Odisha.

According to the company, its Mobile Health Unit programme has reached more than 50,000 residents, including over 4,000 children, across 18 villages in Jharsuguda and Sundargarh. Over the past three years, the programme has organised more than 3,000 free health camps and 1,000 health awareness sessions.

Vedanta Aluminium said its broader community initiatives spanning healthcare, education, livelihoods, infrastructure and social development have benefited more than 200,000 people across 26 villages.
