India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium freighted its introductory 4000-tonne fly ash consignment rake to one of the plants of Holcim India – ACC Cement, Chaibasa Cement Works to produce low-carbon cement. ACC ranks as India’s leading cement producer.

The aluminium company stated that this is a drive of Vedanta Jharsuguda’s waste-to-wealth incumbency and certifies worthwhile utilisation of fly ash, an industrial by-product in the circular economy path.
The thermal power producers generate electricity by using coal and fly ash is a by-product. Vedanta’s Jharsuguda aluminium smelter consumes energy from its coal-fuelled captive power plant.

Now, the implicit properties of fly ash can be used for upgrading product quality, sustaining energy, water, and other beneficial resources, and demising the carbon footprint of the industry.
However, as fly ash is sizeable, it emerges with significant cost and as well an advantage for energy. During the production of cement, every tonne of fly ash used can help to liberate 700-800 kg of carbon emissions, 4.2 million KJ of energy and 341 litres of water.
Sunil Gupta, the CEO of Vedanta Ltd. at Jharsuguda said, “Our endeavours to reduce, reuse and recycle our industrial by-products are rooted in our business ethos of Zero Harm, Zero Waste and Zero Discharge…At Vedanta Jharsuguda, we use high-quality coal which results in better quality fly-ash, and we are delighted to be ACC Cement’s supplier of choice in this regard.”
The metal tycoon Anil Agarwal led, Vedanta Aluminium from its Jharsuguda operations in FY22, consigned 190,000 tonnes of fly ash to multiple cement plants in its surroundings and 60,000 tonnes to local brick manufacturing MSMEs. The metal manufacturing company has also set foot in a long-term partnership with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for constructing greener roads with fly ash.
