According to US Geological Survey data, the United States crude and dried bauxite imports during the fourth quarter of 2023 amounted to 380,000 tonnes, reflecting a decline of 41.36 per cent over the quarter. The downtrend in quarterly imports continued from the third quarter, showcasing a drop of 11.59 per cent from 733,000 tonnes to 648,000 tonnes.
Intermittently, in the second quarter of 2023, the United States crude and dried bauxite imports increased Q-o-Q by 58.66 per cent to stand at 733,000 tonnes, following a plunge of 38.97 per cent in the previous quarter to 462,000 tonnes.
On a year-on-year basis, the US crude and dried bauxite imports in Q4 2023 slumped by 49.8 per cent from 757,000 to 380,000 tonnes.
In the full-year 2023, the United States crude and dried bauxite imports totalled 2.22 million tonnes, down 20.71 per cent from 2.8 million tonnes a year ago.
Jamaica remained the main exporter in the fourth quarter but its supply decreased by 35.50 per cent Q-o-Q to 298,000 tonnes. After an intermittent increase in Q2 by 44.27 per cent sequentially from 445,000 tonnes to 642,000 tonnes, Jamaica’s bauxite exports to the United States decreased in Q3 by 28.04 per cent to 462,000 tonnes.
For the whole year, the US bauxite imports from Jamaica were 1.85 million tonnes - 21.61 per cent less than 2.36 million tonnes a year ago.
Turkey exported 74,800 tonnes of crude and dried bauxite to the US in Q4 2023 versus 180,000 tonnes in Q3. That was a Q-o-Q downfall of 58.44 per cent, according to the US Geological Survey. In Q3, the export volume was up by 96.29 per cent from 91,700 tonnes.
Even in 2022, US crude and dried bauxite imports decreased by 9.39 per cent Y-o-Y, from 3.09 million tonnes to 2.8 million tonnes.
