US aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports in January 2024 jumped close to the previous year’s level

According to the US Census Bureau survey, the United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports in January 2024 jumped close to the previous year’s level, reaching 98,400 tonnes. Last year, the United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports were 99,400 tonnes.

However, from February 2023, the United States imports started dwindling, standing at 72,900 tonnes in the said month. Intermittently, the import volume grew but stood the lowest in April at 66,500 tonnes. On a month-on-month calculation, the United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports in January 2024 edged an increase of 12,500 tonnes or 14.55 per cent from 85,900 tonnes.

Canada, China, and South Korea were the top three exporters of aluminium plates, sheets and bars to the United States. Canada exported 21,300 tonnes in January 2024, which was 39.22 per cent higher than 15,300 tonnes in December 2023. On an annual basis, Canada’s aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports to the US grew by 18.33 per cent from 18,000 tonnes.

Canada’s aluminium plates, sheets and bars exports to the US in January 2024 accounted for 21.65 per cent of the United States total imports.

China and South Korea exported 15,800 tonnes and 9,940 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and bars to the US, up by 27.42 per cent and 13.08 per cent, respectively, from 12,400 tonnes and 8,790 tonnes in December 2023.

On a year-on-year basis, China’s exports to the United States were 28.18 per cent less than 22,000 tonnes but South Korea’s exports stood 126 per cent higher than 4,390 tonnes.
