Samsung SDI secures landmark battery supply agreement with Hyundai

On October 23, 2023, South Korea’s Samsung SDI Co. announced that it had entered into its first supply agreement with Hyundai Motor Co. for electric vehicle (EV), marking its role as Hyundai's third domestic battery supplier in South Korea, following LG Energy Solution Ltd. and SK On Co.

This seven-year supply agreement will diversify Hyundai's battery technology by introducing prismatic batteries. Hyundai has primarily relied on pouch-type batteries to power its electric vehicles (EVs).

According to the terms of the agreement, Samsung will provide Hyundai with its latest model, the sixth-generation prismatic batteries (P6), which will be manufactured at its Hungary plant. Deliveries to Hyundai's assembly lines in Europe are set to begin in 2026, as disclosed in a Samsung regulatory filing.

The P6, slated for mass production in 2024, is expected to offer an energy density improvement of over 10 per cent, resulting in extended driving ranges and reduced charging times compared to its predecessor, the P5.

The P6 batteries belong to the nickel, cobalt, and aluminium (NCA) category, featuring a cathode with a high nickel content of 91 per cent and an anode based on silicon rather than graphite-based materials.

These Samsung SDI batteries will be integrated into Hyundai's forthcoming generation of EVs designed for the European market.

Choi Yoonho, the CEO of Samsung SDI, said, "We have taken the very first step forward with Hyundai Motor. Both companies will continue their partnership for research on next-generation battery platforms. Samsung expects the supply deal would be an important inflexion point in expanding the adoption of prismatic batteries."

Last year, the Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia Corp., announced plans to convert its facility in Czechoslovakia, a vital production site for the group's European market, into an electric vehicle production line.

This move aligns with the European Union's decision to prohibit the sale of new combustion engine vehicles from 2035.

According to AL Circle's recent research and conversations with prominent figures in the global aluminium industry, it is anticipated that the primary source of demand for aluminium in 2024 will be the transportation sector, particularly within the electric vehicle (EV) segment. However, the research also found that the renewable energy (RE) sector will be also on the top contributors list for aluminium demand in 2024.
