According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. According to the latest Mineral Industry Survey from U.S. Geological Survey and recycling statistics published by Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 361,059 tonnes of aluminium scrap during May 2017, up 2.3% over the May 2016 total of 352,894 tonnes. A researcher at Queen’s University in Belfast, has developed a technique to convert dirty aluminium foil into a biofuel catalyst. The technique would help in solving waste and energy problems. Around 20,000 tonnes of aluminium foil packaging is wasted every year in the UK, a researcher said. Researcher has created a crystallisation method that would obtain pure aluminium salt crystals from aluminium foil. According to the newly released 2016 sustainability report, Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line, based in Genoa, Italy reduced waste by 9.5% per passenger day and cut its carbon footprint by 5% from 2015 to 2016. Fuel consumption per passenger also dropped 3%.
