According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Poland’s imports of commodities have decreased at an annualized rate of -0.503%, from US$ 210 billion in 2011 to US$186 billion in 2016 during the last five years. According to an SMM report, aluminium scrap supply would stay tight in 2018 as environmental protection policies weigh in further in the coming year. SMM believes supply tightness would be mostly felt around Chinese New Year and the fourth quarter when demand is at its peak. According to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 367 thousand tonnes of aluminium scrap during October 2017, slightly off from the October 2016 total of 735 million. USGS estimates that recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totalled 303 thousand tonnes in October 2017, a slight drop from that in September 2017 and October 2016. China’s import of aluminium scrap increased 13.23 per cent year-on year to 1.96 million tonnes during the first eleven months of 2017. Aluminium scrap imports stood at 196,581 tonnes in November. The US and Hong Kong were the top exporters of aluminium scrap to China. In November, the US and Hong Kong exported 63,983 tonnes and 43,882 tonnes respectively. During January-November, China imported 553,868 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US, up 8.29 per cent year-on year. Other top countries which supplied aluminium scrap to China were Thailand, Australia, the UK, the Philippines and Malaysia. A team of researchers at the University of York has developed a novel solution for capturing atmospheric, undesirable carbon dioxide using sea water from Whitby in North Yorkshire and aluminium scrap. The technology could help capture 850 million tonnes of the greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. While creating the technology solution, the researchers first filled an aluminium reactor with sea water and waste aluminium collected in the form of used aluminium foils.
