According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. On Aug. 23, China and the US began imposing new rounds of penalties on US$16 billion worth of each other’s goods. This latest round of tariffs included China’s 25 per cent tariff on recovered plastics, paper aluminium and various recovered metals, according to the list released by Chinese authorities earlier in August. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), U.S. aluminium exported to China now has a 50 per cent total tariff on it. China on Aug. 23 bumped it up from 25 per cent to 50 per cent. The 25 per cent tariff now also applies to recovered PET, PE, PVC, PS and other plastics. Teignbridge District Council has announced the launch of a new aluminium foil recycling service to its residents. Aluminium foil trays and household wrapping foil can now be put into black box for recycling alongside other metal packaging such as food/drink cans and empty aerosols. “A simple way to test if a material is foil or not is to do the ‘scrunch test’. Paper and packaging company Mpact is doing trial run at its plant in Benoni, Gauteng, to manufacture construction boards and pallets from recycled aluminium and plastic. The aluminium and plastic materials are recovered from liquid packaging that is recycled at the company’s paper mill in Springs, Gauteng. Liquid packaging cartons for milk or juice are comprised of 25% aluminium and plastic, and 75% fibre (paper). The construction boards are lightweight and durable and have great potential for commercial use. It was part of a campaign delivered by recycling firm Suez, Kensington & Chelsea council, and Alupro’s Every Can Counts programme.
