According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The aluminium scrap shortage panic has grown among the European aluminium alloy producers as they envisaged their pricing levels onwards the resumption of some automotive operations this week. As manufacturers like Volvo and Volkswagen has declared a restricted resumption of their facilities last week, significantly the alloy producers have countered by planning returns of their own. A Western European-based alloy producer said: "We restarted some production on 20 th April’20, to deliver to the auto companies that have restarted. We will have a clearer picture by mid-May. China’s environmental authorities on April 10 reportedly issued the fifth batch of aluminium scrap import quotas for 2020 to allow additional 191,100 tonnes of high-grade aluminium scrap to enter China. The North American aluminium recyclers and producers are taking the advantage of import tariffs to breakthrough revenue at the cost of local beer and beverage firms, even though most of the metal used in their cans is not subject to the levy.
