Purina encourages pet owners to recycle as part of its new #PurinaRecyclesChallenge effort. The initiative aims to tackle the insufficient recycling of aluminium and steel pet food cans despite their inherent recyclability. Based on data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the recycling rate is a mere 32 per cent.

Pet food cans possess the quality of being entirely recyclable, although the active participation of customers is necessary to guarantee their proper disposal in designated recycling receptacles. The significance of recycling pet food cans lies in the substantial reduction of energy consumption when using recycled aluminium cans to produce new aluminium cans, which amounts to a 95 per cent decrease compared to the energy required for manufacturing cans from primary materials.

Gopi Sandhu, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Purina, stated, "We launched the #PurinaRecyclesChallenge to show just how easy it is to make an impact, and to help break down some of the barriers that keep people from recycling their pet food cans. Aluminum and steel are infinitely recyclable, and given the billions of cans produced in the U.S. each year, a seemingly small act of recycling can make a big difference."

Purina's #PurinaRecyclesChallenge is one of the company's efforts to help build a healthier world for pets and their owners to enjoy together. The corporation is on a drive to make its packaging more environmentally friendly. Purina's plastic packaging is now designed for recycling, to reach 95% by 2025. Other packaging materials, such as aluminium, steel, paperboard, and corrugate, are now recyclable. Purina also works with organisations such as The Recycling Partnership to improve the recycling system in the United States.

Sustainability in the global aluminium industry

Purina wants pet owners to participate in the challenge by making their best recycling trick shot video and sharing it on Instagram and/or TikTok to demonstrate how they recycle their pet food cans from now until December 15. Purina will donate $10 for each unique pet food can recycling trick shot video uploaded to TikTok or Instagram with the hashtag #PurinaRecyclesChallenge, and $1 for each engagement with each video, up to a total donation of $100,000.
