Vedanta- controlled Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) has received notice for the closure of its 1,200 Mw power plant from the Chhattisgarh Environment Control Board (CECB). The closure notice has been issued over alleged green norms violation. CECB has asked the company to file a response within 15 days. The board would examine the response and then would ask the company to close its plant if result would find unsatisfactory. The closure notice states that ash slurry coming out of the damaged ash dam passing near the plant is polluting water in the Belgiri nullah (canal) that drains into Hasdeo river. The closure of plant that is located in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district is expected to have impact on the production of aluminium due to lack of power.

China, the dominant producer and exporter of petcoke, is set to witness a drop in its total petcoke export in 2017. Due to the recent environmental pollution control crackdowns in China, the supply of this critical raw material of aluminium, has become tight in the domestic market. However, CPC demand in China is forecast to increase by 852,000 tonnes year-on-year leading to a deficit of 78,000 tonnes in 2017. Petcoke or petroleum coke is a by-product of the oil refining process, which when subject to calcination (further heat processing) yields calcined petcoke. CPC is a rich source of carbon and is used to produce anode for the electrolytic reduction process of aluminium smelting. According to reliable industry sources, China exported about 704,264 tonnes of CPC in H1 2016, of which...

AlCircle is back again with its second report! After the success of “Potline Failure in Aluminium Smelters: Observations and Recent Case Studies (2013-2017),” the Virtual Aluminium Ecosystem has published the special AlCircle Market Insight report titled ‘ Global Aluminium & Raw Material Market with Sectoral Focus on CPC, CTP and Prebaked Anode (2016-17).’ Centred on the changing market dynamics of the Aluminium, Calcined Petcoke, Coal Tar Pitch and Prebaked Anode industries, this report promises to cater to the stakeholders of the entire upstream aluminium value chain. Today, the global aluminium industry is at an inflexion point. Production bases of Aluminium, CPC, CTP, and Prebaked Anodes had long started their shift from the West to Asia. Today, China is at the driver’s seat, as far...

Coal tar pitch production is growing globally driven by the ferrous and non-ferrous metal sector growth. A critical binder material for anode production required in aluminium smelting through Hall Heroult method of electrolysis, CTP remains in high demand where prebaked technology is used for making aluminium. A couple of decades back West Europe and North America used to be the base of CTP production; but over the years the base has shifted to China. Today, CTP forms approximately 76 per cent of China’s total coal tar market, and coal tar pitch export forms a significant part of its GDP. China exported 1,44,405 tonnes of CTP in the first three months of 2017. In March alone, the export quantity peaked at 85,128 tonnes. Following the wide-scale environmental pollution control checks and...

According to the latest data published by the World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS), global primary aluminium market recorded a deficit at the end of the first seven months of 2017. The market recorded a deficit of 1.38 million tonnes during January-July, up from 751,000 tonnes of deficit in the whole of 2016. The WBMS report also states that the global demand for primary aluminium was recorded at 35.93 million tonnes during the first seven months of this year, from 33.71 million tonnes a year ago. Previous reports had stated that aluminium supply worldwide was in a deficit of 1.07 million tonnes during the first six months of 2017, from a deficit of 1.1 million tonnes for the whole of 2016.

Vedanta today announced that the State Pollution Control Board, Odisha ('SPCB') has revoked order for closure of three units (two units of 135 MW each and one unit of 600 MW) on September 20, 2017, and hence restarted these units of power plant. The company will not need to buy the 200 MW power from external sources. On 13 September 2017, SPCB had directed a temporary closure of the five power plant units (three units of 135 MW each of the 1215 MW power plant, and two units of 600 MW each of the 2400 MW power plant), following a breach in the Ash Pond dyke wall at Jharsuguda. The revocation order will help the Company get complete reliable power generation back in place, satisfying the current requirement for Smelter operations.

According to the figures released by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) and published by Shanghai Metals Market, the global aluminium production in the month of August dropped sharply both on monthly and yearly basis. The global aluminium production stood at 4.8 million tonnes in August, down 55,000 tonnes from July and 63,000 tonnes from a year ago. The production of aluminium outside China was 2.16 million tonnes in August, from 2.17 million tonnes in July. In other news from SMM, the Commission of Industry and Information Technology of Henan Province said that 70,000 tonnes of aluminium capacity from three smelters are available for sale nationwide.

LME aluminium strengthened further as positions dropped sharply. The light metal contract rose to US2,164 per tonne on Wednesday, September 20, up from US$2,490 per tonne on Tuesday, September 19. The U.S. Federation decided to keep the interest rate unchanged, but sounded hawkish on rate hike forecasts and balance sheet reduction sending U.S. dollar index to new highs. This is likely to weigh down base metal prices. Shanghai Metals Market predicts that LME aluminium which opened low on Thursday, September 21, will range at US$2,165-2,185 per tonne. As on September 20, LME official cash buyer aluminium price (Bid Price) stands at US$2,163.50 per tonne, cash seller & settlement aluminium price (Offer price) is US$2,164 per tonne, 3M Bid Price is US$2,190 per tonne, 3M Offer Price is...
