Changes in aluminium ingot and billet inventory before and after National Day, 2020-2026

According to SMM statistics, changes in aluminium ingot and aluminium billet (collectively referred to as aluminium inventory) inventories at major consumption areas in China around the National Day holiday from 2020 to 2026 show overall destocking before the holiday, with the most concentrated inventory buildup during the holiday, followed by a pullback after the holiday. During the one-week National Day holiday period (September 30 to October 8) from 2020 to 2025, aluminium ingot, aluminium billet, and total aluminium inventories all accumulated, with aluminium ingot increases of 4-17.3 per cent, aluminium billet increases of 12.7-66 per cent, and total aluminium inventory increases of 6.9-21.2 per cent, with the aluminium billet buildup significantly larger than that of aluminium...

Aluminium prices consolidate ahead of National Day holiday; watch for post-holiday inventory buildup and concentrated arrivals risks

1. Macro perspective The US-Iran conflict entered its second week. After the escort coalition intervened, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz partially recovered, but war risk insurance rates remained elevated. Brent crude pulled back from a high of USD 101 to consolidate around USD 95, with energy cost support weakening from earlier levels but not yet fading. The US Fed delivered a 25bp rate hike at its September FOMC meeting, and the dot plot indicated one more hike may still occur this year. Chair Warsh struck a hawkish tone in his post-meeting remarks, and the US dollar index held at a 13-month high. Next week, attention turns to China's official PMI on September 30, as well as US PCE and non-farm payrolls data during the National Day holiday—with China's market closed for seven days...

The 14.65 per cent year-on-year decline in August imports, coupled with a nearly flat month-on-month performance, indicates that imports have not collapsed but rather maintained a steady inflow. Cumulative exports for January-August totalled 167,500 tonnes, up 9.26 per cent year-on-year....

Indian aluminium producers fear earnings drop due to falling aluminium prices

With the international aluminium price hovering at 20-month low, the earnings outlook for the domestic aluminium producers are at a risk and is banking heavily on import duty hike. Currently the three months LME aluminium prices are at US$ 1846 per tonne, much lower than what analysts had estimated. Earnings estimates were largely made with US$1,940 a tonne as the price benchmark. The downturn in price will lower the earnings estimate significantly and the industry is banking on import duty hike. Indian primary aluminium industry has proposed an increase in import duty on scrap and primary aluminium from 2.5 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively, to 10 per cent. Though an increase in import duties may offer some support, earnings outlook would remain weak due to the falling...
